Me vi a mí mismo.

2(★★★)/5

Kellen, is son of the Ke's House, one of the most reputables because of it's magic self-control. However, for him all the hope is lost since even if he puts a lot of effort on it, he can't invoke any type of magic. Neither any of the bands of his arm has lightened up, despite of being about to turn 16 years old, the limit age to decide if you became a Jan'tep -a magician- or if you are going to be a Sha'tep -a slave who lives under the orders of it's own family, considered as inferior beings because of the inability to use the magic-.

I guess that's why I couldn't leave. As much as my whole being was crying out for me to get up and run, no matter how small I felt, somewhere inside me there was an embers of anger that prevented me from moving. I swore to myself that I would go to class every day at the oasis, for everyone to see me.

After almost being killed by his sister, he meets Ferius Parfaix, a misterious and extremely interesting woman who, little by little will begin to teach him more than he imagined in the beginning and who will open his eyes to see that not everything is seen with the naked eye, also that cunning can, by far, surpass magic. She will accompany him on an adventure that will change his life forever.

Speaking of the characters, Spellslinger it's characterized by the customization of each one of them. They all have an unique touch.

What Ferius had taught me was not magic ... but it was terribly close to it.

Kellen Argos is a clever 15 years old guy. Since he was a child he was taught that magic was everything, therefore, the lacking of it dishonors the Ke's House and makes the people to turn into servants. It's impossible for him to show such defiency manifesting his magic considering that his younger sister already has 4 of the 7 bands lightened up. So he had to use other tricks to compensate his lack of magical ability. Kellen is a persistent and highly intelligent person, he wonders about things that others wouldn't dare to ask. In spite, of all this, he has considered himself inferior for incessantly trying to make his spells take shape, in vain.

Ferius Parfaix is a foreigner woman who claims to be a cartographer. In his twenties and red-haired, she always has something to say and tries to teach Kellen about his value and that magic is not everything. She said that the Jan'tep use it only to brag about them, being cruel and rejecting everything considered "different". She is always accompanied by her trusty deck of cards and her smoking pipe. She tends to get drunk constantly and is all the time showing up to help with Kellen's problems.

I'm a woman, boy. You probably don't know because, considering that you live in this underdeveloped place, you have not met any other. In any case, a woman is like a man, but smarter and with bigger balls.

Shalla Argos is Kellen's younger sister, an extremely arrogant and impulsive 13 years old girl, who will do whatever it takes to maintain the supposed supremacy of Ke's House, including getting rid of her problematic brother, whom she sees as nothing but a black sheep since her powers began to manifest and his evident lacking of them. She is insidiously nosy, believing that being practically a prodigy for had shown so many types of magic at such a young age, exempts her from all the problems that knock on her door over and over again.

Ke'heops is Kellen's father and one of the most powerful and respected masters of magic. The only thing that matters to him is to become the Clan's Prince and that his son is an embarrasment to his perfect and amazing legacy. Shalla is his shadow, she inherited and learned his arrogance. He believes that his word is a law and has never really cared about Kellen's well-being. In his sight there is only  power.

Reichis is a cat squirrel who continously wants to gouge out human's eyes also strip their skins for being crude and cruel. It is impulsive, reckless and always has witty retorts to Kellen.

—I'm thinking.
—What do you have to think !? We go in there, we kill people we don't like, and we rescue people we like! It's simple.
—They are three strong men and they probably have weapons. Besides, about killing them, do you really mean it?
—And then we eat his tongue. Two for me and one for you. Do you think it's OK?

The Dowager Lady is an extremely interesting woman of over 300 years old. She is cunning, always using Kellen's mental capacity to challenge him and consequently, to discover the Jan'tep's secrets that have been jealously guarded for so long. She can changes her appearance whenever she wants it.

That's the question that people like your father, like those pompous idiots on the Council, don't even want to ask. The mere possibility that there is a threat that magic cannot respond to, seems impossible.

Nephenia, Panahsi and Tennat are the typical thugs whom disown Kellen or are ashamed of his lack of power.
Nephenia is a girl willing to do anything necessary to be noticed and wants to be taught about magic. She's Kellen's first love, it's calm and has a gentle nature, as all Jan'tep woman are accustomed to behaving.
Panahsi was Kellen's best friend until his inability to manipulate magic shown up. He is said to be incredibly powerful even at his age and doesn't hesitate to change to the other side to be accepted by others.
Tennat is the youngest son of the Ra's House, the rivals of Ke's house. Knowingly that a lot of power circulates through his veins, he is cruelty, using his magic to show off and hurt defenseless people. It's nothing more than  a full-fledged bully with few lights on his brain.

Now, altough I was prepared for the emotional BOOM that this book represents, the truth is that I wasn't ready for the complex setting that Sebastien de Castell give us, in this introduction of a magnificient six book's series.

We embark on a magical adventure in which the magicians have survived thanks to 'The Oasis', a place where they can practice and enhance their magical abilities until are manifested before the stipulated age, which is 16 years old. Otherwise, they're subjected to becoming a family slave if they're "lucky" and their House has the "compassion" to allows it, they'll be left aside and must forget any respectful treatment or feel like a part of the family. If they're not this "fortunate" they are relegated to a forced labor's life in the mines.

Obviously, this is one of the fears that keeps Kellen aside from sleep every night. He belongs to one of the most powerful and revered houses, there's an immense amount of expectations placed on him. It doesn't help the pressure he feels because 4 of his sister's bands already lit up despites still being so young.

Sebastien de Castell presents us 7 types of magic: breath, sand, silk, iron, ember, blood and shadow. This last is the most dangerous and prohibited, a death sentence for the magicians; everyone can kill them at any time because it is said to carries a disease that drives the persons crazy little by little. Each magic determines the Jan'tep's power and mastering the greatest amount of them skillfully is what make them become Magic's Master.

In fact, the beginning it's a little bit abrupt, considering the complexity of this world, they initially assume you already know many things. It's a lot of information to digest and it's difficult if you're waiting a gradually evolution and weren't mentally prepared for that. Even with that, I can't help to praise Sebastien de Castell's ability for being able to creates such a fantastic world.

As for the characters, the one that I liked the most for his growing evolution and cunning personality is Kellen, who little by little will learn that magic isn't everything and the perfect mastery of it doens't make you a better person. It has been extremely interesting to accompany him in that travel until he realizes that things aren't black or white, as well as he has good abilities that makes up for his lack of magic.

Since the beginning, he semmed complex and interesting for me, is certainly charming. I can't help but tell about how much I suffered with him on this journey, which hasn't been an easy task with that shame and constant self-rejection also we had to face the Jan'tep's rejection. I've endured with him in every frustration for those failed attemps, the anger and pain that carries to those who wanted to discourage him. He's exceptionally charismatic despite of all, I'll look forward to see how he manifests in the next book.

I saw myself. I saw who I was and I saw the man I wanted to become.
Finally, I understood that this man was very different from my friends, from my family, from my town, and I knew, immediately, what exactly that man would do at that moment.
I would do something stupid.

Ferius is a masterful character. She's a different woman with her feet on the ground who will guide our protagonist in this self-discovery journey, and is going to help him opening his eyes to that deception in which the Jan'teps have lived for so long. She's funny, scathing and smart, PLUS, she tries to make Kellen appreciate himself for who he is. She disdains all those who tries to detract her for being a woman as well as a foreigner and being unable to create magic. It's really mysterious and has more than one trick -literally- under her sleeve.

Speaking of the rest of the characters -excepts Reichis and the Dowager Lady- I've loathed them with a thousand suns' strenght and the whole indignation my twisted guts could endure. They're so stupid, classy and blind that I wanted to give myself a shot on the head because the annoyance they make me feel. When I read that Kellen's grudge was growing my mind was literally screaming: "Dude, you have every fucking reason in the world to be mad with this fucking town!"

Mainly, all in Kellen's family are a heartless bastards whom I never want to read again in my life. For me, it's better if all of them die and we'll carry the party in peace once it's done. Especially, what they've been hiding is something turned in twist my guts and made my blood run. I'm sure Kellen will be able to solve or take care of it later, at least I hope so. May the hope help us to maintain ignited the spirit.
When you explore the world outside your hometown, the other side of the walls that surrounded what you are used to see ... then you discover that you hardly ever do what you have to do. An action, brave and committed with the heart, leads to war and destruction. Another, cowardly and greedy, brings peace and prosperity. Although one thing is true. What you have done, you have done as a man.

It has been a long time since I enjoyed so much a fantasy book. Sebastien de Castell's writing is something grom another world: it's fresh, fun and knows how to touch your heart, I don't remember when was the last time this has been done in my case. The descriptions are amazing, they're not excessive and transport you perfectly in both the location and time that the author tries to enter us. Frankly, I stand up before it.

As if that weren't enough, it's a book full of feelings, these are remarkably human and you can easily feel identified with them. The plot is a gem, the story doesn't decline at any time, It's full of action, adventure and has Plot-twist's that made me shiver and have chills.

Magic is neither good nor bad; it is how we use it that dictates its purpose.

I think the ending almost paralized my heart. The knot seemed like a dead end but the problem has been solved in such an unusual and creative way that caused my brain to short-circuit. Good move, Sebastien, good move.
Spellslinsger is a fantasy book with unforgettable characters, a sensational plot and an incredible setting. Despite being the "introduction" of the series, it has been such an intense and complete experience that I cannot but admire and support Sebastien on this long journey for which I can't wait, with the desire of having Shadowblack in my hands.
